“A Child Called ‘It'” by Dave Pelzer proves survival is possible even in the worst situations. The story shows the truth about child abuse and how people can make a difference. In Dave Pelzer’s memoir, he was abused and starved by his alcoholic mother. Pelzer’s purpose is to share his story, inspire others who may be in a similar situation, and open people’s eyes about the topic. The book starts with his rescue in the first chapter and then moves to chronological order from his good childhood to his further abuse. Each chapter focuses on different parts of his life and abuse. Pelzer’s story helped me understand the severity of child abuse and what people can do to help.
I really enjoyed the book because it was emotional, powerful, and eye-opening. My favorite part about the book was that I felt emotionally connected to it. While reading, it was like I could feel the pain that he was enduring. Although the book was harsh, it was a good story that I think most people should read. His story was inspiring and showed resilience, strength, and survival. People who can handle serious and mature topics and who want to feel empathy will enjoy the book. I recommend the book because I feel like it is not only a book to learn more about child abuse, but it is also inspiring and shows that you can still have strength in the worst situations.
