With finals around the corner, studying can be intimidating. This task is often put to the side, not done effectively, or not done at all. There are several methods to study, such as active recall, spaced repetition, the Feynman technique, and many more. The type of studying a student can do varies based on their learning style, personality, and what subjects they are focusing on. Although studying can be daunting, it is a valuable tool to learn, especially before college, which is not always taught.
One of the most effective studying methods is active recall. According to Birmingham University, in short, active recall can sometimes be tricky.
“A learning method where you continuously test yourself by pulling information out of your memory instead of just passively reading notes.”
This method strengthens memory and moves information into long-term memory. Using flashcards for this tactic is a great way to use active recall.
Compared to simply looking over notes and highlighting key terms, which makes students feel productive, in the end, it will not help individuals retain information.
Another popular studying method includes the Feynman Technique. Simply put, a person will choose a topic, teach it simply, identify gaps in understanding, and finally, review and repeat until clear. This method explicitly exposes weaknesses while also deepening understanding. It is especially effective if students actively say things aloud.
Aside from study techniques, the amount of time students spend studying is overlooked; long cramming sessions do not benefit anyone. According to Rhodes College, focused studying can be more beneficial.
“It is much more realistic to stay focused for 40-60 minutes. Try to do 3-4 focused study sessions per day.”
This is also known as spaced repetition, which can be done over the course of a week or in just one day with smaller sessions.
Additionally, when studying, it is important to consider the learning environment. It makes all the difference to switch up when to study, how to get quality sleep, when to listen to calming music, and even when to prioritize some snacking food.
No one wants to spend more time studying than they need to, so finding the right study method can be a long process but once students get it down, it becomes infinitely easier.
