Wildcat of the Week: Taya Handley

With quarantine leading many people to explore new hobbies and interests, De Soto High School senior Taya Handley took her photography to the next level during the pandemic.

“I started my photography business by just asking friends if they wanted to take pictures,” Handley said. “I have always loved taking pictures of everything. It was something I always loved doing, being able to capture life and the moments of it.”

With COVID-19 transpiring, Handley decided to implement her photography more than ever before.

“This year I stepped out of my comfort zone to do it because of everything [that] happened with COVID. I needed something to do rather than be home all the time so this helped me connect with people a lot,” Handley said.

Over time, Handley has learned her favorite types of photoshoots are couples as it is what she wants to pursue one day.

“I want to focus on couples because I want to do wedding photography and eventually even destination weddings and elopements. I want to be able to travel all over [the world] one day,” Handley said.

In addition, Handley has learned many lessons through photography.

“My biggest advice to anyone wanting to do photography is to just go for it. Put yourself out there,” Handley said. “You’re not going to know everything right away, so just ask people if you can take pictures for them.”

Handley’s clients, one being DHS senior Hayleigh Henderson, have enjoyed working with her as well.

“It was such a fun experience to take pictures with Taya. She gave me all types of poses to do and let me go at my own pace,” Henderson said. “She is one of the sweetest people you will ever meet and you truly see how much she cares about you and how much she loves taking pictures”.

Not only is photography a hobby for Handley, but it is also a long-term goal for her as well.

“This is what I want for my life,” Handley said. “I don’t want a 9-5. I want to do something that I love and can be good at. I want to be able to capture moments for people that they will love for the rest of their lives.”
