The annual De Soto High School Powder Puff football game, a flag football competition between classes, was held on Sept. 22. The sophomore girls defeated the freshmen, and the senior girls defeated the juniors.

The girls put in practice and preparation with their coaches to train for the homecoming tradition. Senior Katie Dossett participated in Powder Puff for the first time this year.

“I thought I was going to be the worst one playing because I have no idea how to play football, but there were a lot of girls [who hadn’t played before either] and we just got out there and had fun with it,” Dossett said.

The sophomore and freshman game also had intense competition. Sophomore Tiye Kindred was playing Powder Puff for the first time.

“The game was really exciting. I was trying to make sure I was defending the team. It was hard, but in the end it was really cool,” Kindred said.

The senior team was coached by Principal Dustin Mortenson, who pushed the team to win.

“Mortenson was very determined to win. It got a little intense for the most part he kept it lighthearted fun. He encouraged us to have fun but win,” Dossett said.

Kindred enjoyed the social aspect of powder puff along with the competition.

“I got to meet a lot of girls in the school I didn’t know and it was really cool to be able to bond with them,” Kindred said.

The senior team victory was especially significant, as the seniors lost the past two years.

“Our win felt pretty good. Everyone was super hyped and into the game so I think that definitely helped us win,” Dossett said. “At the end everyone was screaming and jumping around, and it was overall a super fun experience.”
