De Soto High School hosted its Prom at the Shawnee Civic Center on Saturday, May 3. According to some, prom was successful, although there were a few things that the students and sponsor, McKenzi Crow, would change.
“I think there are a lot of things that went well. With this being Mrs. Stone’s and my second year we learned a lot from the first year like the fact that we used the whole gym the first year,” Crow said “It was really huge, and we don’t have enough students to fill that, so by cutting it in half I think it made it so that is wasn’t so spread out.”
The Prom had a theme of “The Great Gatsby,” and the decorations, live band and candy bar were well received by the students.
“They did a good job with the decorations for sure, and they did a creative job with the candy bar. I thought that was interesting, and the band played and sounded really good,” junior Nick Mechler said.
Although people enjoyed the decorations, many of the students had an issue with the lighting and venue.
“The lights over on one side of the gym were all on, and it kind of kept people from going over there and dancing, and people were kind of reluctant to dance and just enjoy themselves. Also, the parents were watching the whole dance and that was kind of awkward,” junior Kate Barger said.
The Prom was viewed as successful overall, and many of those who went seemed to enjoy it.
“I think it was a huge success. We got lots of compliments on the decorations. I hope the kids enjoyed it as much as I did and the other teachers,” Crow said
