USD 232 celebrates Veterans Day
Veterans Day is a national holiday in November that honors the veterans who have served in the United States Armed Forces.
Veterans Day is celebrated throughout USD 232 and the national holiday on Nov. 11 to mark the anniversary of the end of World War I.
War War I ended on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month of 1918. Veterans Day became a federal holiday after an act was approved on May 13, 1938, during the aftermath of World War II.
In the school district, Mill Creek and Lexington Trails middle school have an assembly to honor the veterans. During the assembly, veterans come in and speak out about their experiences to the school.
Starside Elementary invited the DHS Voce choir on Friday, Nov. 10 to sing the Star Spangled Banner to the school and veterans.
“I wish we could have stayed. Voce was very honored to be asked to sing and we hope to do it again in the future,” said DHS choir teacher Mindy Fry.
People celebrate Veterans Day in polite ways to honor service members. For example, some families of fallen veterans will share the story of their loved ones. Others will serve the community to honor the service members who served the United States.
In other countries, such as Canada, Great Britain and Australia, Veterans Day is celebrated as well but the day is known as “Remembrance Day.”
