Letter from the Editors: Issue 2

Dear student body,

Another month has gone by, and we are so excited to introduce Issue 2, our Halloween themed issue. This publication was so much fun to create, and we hope you enjoy it as much as we do.

Our cover features FACS teacher Caroline Friday and several of her students who came together after school one day to have a FACS Halloween party/photo shoot. We were able to take pictures as Friday and her students created six Halloween treats, four of which are featured in our paper for you to make at home.

Continuing with the Halloween theme, we interviewed a staff member and two students who believe to have experienced paranormal activity – pennies appearing out of nowhere, footsteps in the attic, random voices when no one is home and creepy abandoned buildings. Along with this, our photo essay this issue includes pictures from our behind the scenes tour of the 3rd Street Asylum haunted house in Bonner Springs.

Moving away from the spooky theme, there are several awesome things going on in our school that we featured as well. Principal Dustin Mortenson has organized a new club made up of a select group of students to advise him in how to make DHS better called the Principal’s Council. Along with this, the Debate team has begun to prepare for the upcoming season and held a ‘novice debate tournament’ to help the students new to the Debate team get comfortable in a tournament setting, and the Student Council held a birthday party for foster kids through Happy Birthday, Inc. this month. We featured several students who have balanced school work and a job in the evenings and four athletes who have had major success during the fall season.

With the presidential election coming up in just a few weeks, we created a spread all about the two main candidates, as well as a third-party candidate, and included demographics on political affiliations at DHS to provide information and opinions from peers for students who will be voting this November.

Finally, with Homecoming in just a few days, some of our staff members wrote an opinion piece on underage drinking and drunk driving to help keep the dance as safe as possible.

We are continuing to improve our publication with each issue and are extremely proud of how this issue came out. We hope you enjoy it and look forward to the issues to come.

Sincerely,

Emma Bascom and Sydney Hoover
