The De Soto High School girls varsity soccer team set a record as being the first in DHS history to be undefeated League champions. Following a 2-0 victory over Baldwin on May 11.
The regular soccer season has come to a close and the team has finished with a record of 15-0-1.
“It’s been our best season in De Soto girls’ history. It’s our first undefeated season, so it’s a pretty exciting time,” assistant coach Melissa Stone said.
The team’s defense has also set another record with only allowing six goals against them all season. Sophomore forward Drayvhen Moore believes one of the most important aspects to have for a successful team is comradery among the team and believes it’s been a big contributing factor to the team’s undefeated season.
“This year we’ve done a lot of team bonding, and I feel like thats helped alot and we all just really like each other so its alot easier to play with each other,” Moore said.
The team is already thinking about what they can do to improve for next season.
“We struggle with finishing and when we play teams that aren’t as good we usually go down to their level but I think we need to play to our maximum level and not the other team,” Moore said.
Stone says the team’s success all starts with the team’s leaders and seniors and hopes they can continue with great leadership into future seasons.
“I think our captains have done an awesome job, and not just our captains, our seniors have really led the way and they’ve been starters on the team since their freshman year and they are very warm and welcoming people and easy to get along with,” Stone said.
The wildcats began their quest for a third consecutive trip to state with an 18-0 victory over Washington High School on May 16. DHS plays for the regional title today at 4 p.m. vs. Shawnee Heights.
