Brace yourselves football season is here. With a new team, field and year, hopes are high for the coming season.
The season kicks off Friday night, when the team will host it’s first scrimmage open to the public.
“It will be held at the south practice field. The youth players will start at 5:30 p.m., junior high at 6 p.m. and [the high school] starts at 6:30 p.m. It’ll get over at about 7:30 p.m. because there are no lights out there so we have to start early,” head football coach Brian King said.
The scrimmage has been moved due to the construction in the stadium.
“The current status of our new turf field is that it should be done the first week of September. The track will not be completed during that first week of September,” associate principal Ryan Johnson said. “They will have the concrete down for the track on Sept. 26, according to a schedule, the track and field will be off-limits for about two weeks, that is when they will be getting the track down.”
In addition to moving the location of the scrimmage, other non-varsity games have been moved as well.
“We have had to move some of our lower-level games to Mill Creek during that time but all of our varsity games, weather and construction permitting, should be played on the new turf,” Johnson said.
Bleachers will be available at the practice field, but seating is limited.
“There will be some seating, but people should bring a lawn chair. We will just line them up around the field,” King said.
In order to gain access to the game, students and attendees have the choice of bringing a bottle of Gatorade (or any other sports drink) or paying a fee of $1.
“There will be two big drums at both entries on either side that you can drop off the Gatorade as your ticket in,” King said.
Due to construction, the parking lot will still be closed off. Parking will continue as normal, in addition to available parking located at Lexington Trails Middle School.
“We will be following the same procedure the students use during school, just follow the arrows and the signs. I know that we will have some extra things going on by the practice field, so just be aware, patient, take your time and be safe,” Johnson said.
The scrimmage serves a larger purpose besides a way to get Gatorade and get people excited for the season.
“It’s to kind of get a game under your belt before a real game, to put you in a game-like situation before we have a game so that you can work on things that need to be fixed. Refs come out so that they can call out the kids on their mistakes so they don’t make them again,” King said.
