DHS girls’ basketball kicks off
As fall sports are coming to an end, winter sports are already kicking off. This year, girls’ basketball has already begun their conditioning as they prepare for their upcoming season.
Head coach Ryan Robie voices his excitement for the team this year as he has many goals for the Wildcats.
“We are really excited for the team this year,” Robie said. “We expect our team to be deeper than we have been in the past and think we have a good chance of putting a lot of points on the board this year.”
Additionally, this year’s team enhances unique qualities compared to years prior.
“We’ve got a few upperclassmen that we will look to for leadership, but a lot of freshmen/sophomores will need to step up in a hurry if we are going to maximize our potential,” Robie said. “I would also say this team has the potential to really score in high volume which should be a lot of fun to coach.”
In addition to Robie’s excitement for the season, the other girls share this energy as well as they embrace the new year.
“I am so excited to get this year going,” senior Macy Carver said. “I think we will be a small team size, but we can adjust fast.”
Additionally, Carver is prepared to step up as a leader when it comes to having a team, as the majority of the players are underclassmen.
“I’m very excited to meet the new freshmen,” Carver said. “I think this year it will really help us grow as a team as we welcome new girls.”
Although Carver is excited to lead the team, she also understands that there will be some obstacles as well.
“I am nervous that my ankle might bother me, especially because I injured it last season,” Carver said. “I also am nervous when it comes to dribbling because I am still not the best with my right hand.”
In addition to the team waiting to kick off the season, they are also pleased to welcome back the old atmosphere prior to Covid-19.
With many protocols taking place last year, the team was not allowed to have many spectators as well as other factors that made the games have a very different environment.
“I am so excited to have fans and the band back in the gym,” sophomore Violet Conley said. “It should make for a really fun atmosphere to play in.”
Additionally, Conley points out that along with the good shooting the team carries, they hold other strengths as well.
“This year will be really good because we will have a faster offense,” Conley said.
As the season comes up, the wildcats are more ready than ever to get the ball rolling.
