Overcoming the uncertainty of this fall season, the 2020 De Soto High School football team has obtained the United Kansas Conference championship title for the second year in a row after defeating Leavenworth High School 35-28 on Oct. 16.

“As a three-year starter in my senior season, it means a lot to me and the seniors around me to secure a UKC championship one last time. The whole team expected nothing less, and it felt great to accomplish our goal,” said senior quarterback Jackson Miller. 

Although this is a huge success, the team still has plenty of areas to improve as they anticipate the competition of the postseason. 

“The offense didn’t feel great about how we played against Leavenworth, so we spent our time fixing our mistakes in film,” Miller said.

Head coach Brian King also commented on the opinion of the team’s performance after the unpredictability of the current season. 

“I was proud of our kids [for winning the UKC title] with everything they had to go through this summer. This team has done a great job of persevering, and done a great job this season,” King said. 

Although winning the UKC title is a big accomplishment, both Miller and King stated that the team is ready to play in the postseason and fight for the State title. 

“It is always that State title we are trying to pursue,” King said. 

In the upcoming weeks, the DHS football team will begin the postseason on our home turf, against the Leavenworth Pioneers on Nov. 6.  This event will be livestreamed at 7 p.m. for all to be able to support the Wildcats throughout their journey.
