Softball and baseball teams receive on campus fields

With the end of the De Soto High School baseball and softball teams seasons, a new promising addition has been brought about. The DHS baseball and softball teams are now getting new fields.

USD 232 director of facilities Steve Daghand believes that these new fields are very promising and should be starting to be built soon, although the actual process will take some time.

“This decision was made by the Board of Education [and] most likely, these projects would take place in either 2020 or 2021, and they will take about nine months to build,” Deghand said.

According to Athletic Director Ryan Johnson the new fields are most likely going to be on campus.

“I believe that one softball field will be turned into an actual competition field, so improve it and put baseball on campus as well,” Johnson said.

Deghand agrees saying that one field will be built and another will be remodeled.

“There would be one new field constructed (baseball) and one existing softball field renovated,” Deghand said.  “Construction of the new field would take place west of the parking lot where the band practiced prior to the installation of turf at the stadium.”

Johnson says that the fields were decided on being made by a lot of De Soto community members.

“There was a committee put together of community members and administrators and district administrators who identified a bunch of projects and through all of those conversations and committee work they made a list and De Soto’s fields were on it,” Johnson said.

Head softball coach Janelle Woolery believes that a lot of people will be very excited about the new fields and how close they will be to the actual high school.

“It’s going to be great having home games actually at home and getting more people out to our games,” Woolery said.
