Wildcats set up for a corner kick at the game vs Louisburg on Sept. 12.

Imagine the scene; the bright lights illuminate the grass field, and the scoreboard is lit up with a tied score of 2-2, going into overtime.

This was the exact situation for the De Soto High School boys’ varsity soccer team vs. league rival Louisburg High School on the game Sept. 12.

Coming off to a slow start, two goals were scored against DHS early in the first half. That was quickly turned around with goals by sophomore Carlos Nava-Ramirez and junior Sean Eggers late in the second half.

After going into overtime for the fourth time this season, the Wildcats captured a win with a goal by junior Rohan Singh to bump up their season record to 3-3.

“It actually means a lot to the team and it’s a big booster for us,” said senior captain Ethan Rodriguez. “We’ve gone to overtime two times already and we’ve lost both of those games, so this is a huge accomplishment.”

For the Wildcats, it was a satisfying win considering the amount of playing they have been doing in overtime.

“When you lose in overtime, which we’ve done twice this year, it’s heartbreaking,” head coach Jesse Smith said.  “To get a win is a huge boost of confidence and it’s a really nice payoff.”

As for the rest of the season, there is plenty of hard work to come.

“[We hope] to do the best we can to win league even though we lost early on,  but [also] to win out the rest of our season,” Rodriguez said.

The Wildcats are next in action at Paola High School on Sept. 18.
