Rodriguez expanding his role with football
While many De Soto High School students participate in the fall sports season, senior Ethan Rodriguez is unique in the fact that he is playing two sports this season. For the second year in a row, Rodriguez will play both soccer and football.
According to head football coach Brian King, Rodriguez’s natural athleticism allows him to play both sports in the same season.
“He’s one of the fastest kids in our region in track, so he’s got a lot of speed and is all around a very good athlete,” King said.
Rodriguez’s natural drive also motivates him to compete in two different sports.
“I think I really just want to be good at everything I do, especially in sports, so me not being good at football makes me want to work harder,” Rodriguez said. “Since I’m so focused on getting better, doing twice the work doesn’t feel like as much as it is to me.”
King also attributes Rodriguez’s athletic success to his work ethic.
“He gives everything he’s got every day. He’s always real focused and is a good role model for the underclassmen on how you should compete and how you should carry yourself both in the hallways and on the field,” King said. “We’re lucky to have him.”
While Rodriguez’s main focus has been soccer, he began focusing more on football this year as he will be playing wide receiver in addition to kicking.
“We’re going to work him a bit at receiver this year, so we’ve got to get the timing down and not having him all the time is a little difficult,” King said. “With that being said, when he gets there he does a phenomenal job, and we’ll find ways to work him in and utilize his athleticism.”
Rodriguez is excited for the opportunity to play more this year.
“Last year was my first season of football so I just kicked, but now I’m more comfortable on the field and I’m excited to play wide receiver. It should be a challenge but a lot of fun,” Rodriguez said.
