The boys’ and girls’ basketball teams both defeated Baldwin High School on Friday, Feb. 24. The boys won 66-56, marking their second straight win of the regular season, while the girls won 58-51, moving their record to 13-7.

For both teams, the win was special because it occurred on senior night.

“It was an emotional game for the seniors. Before the game, our parents gave little speeches and all of us were in tears. It felt really good beating such a good team, as well,” senior Jackie Kennard said.

For senior Sydney Jones, the win held even more meaning because she was the leading scorer with 23 points.

“After the fact, it’s a really cool feeling because it was the last official home game. In the heat of the game, I had no idea that was happening,” Jones said.

The leading scorer on the boys’ side was senior Noah Wilson with 19 points. The next leader was Alex Wilcox, with 12 points. For the girls, the next leading scorer was senior Tanith Beal with 11 points.

The teams are looking forward to Sub-State, as well. The boys’ team will be playing Saint James Academy at Saint James Academy on March 2. The girls’ played Saint James Academy at home on March 1, and advanced to the Sub-State Championship.

“We’re just keeping in mind that once it’s over, it’s over, and we want to make our season as long as it can be,” Kennard said, on repeating their successes at Sub-State. “Our practices have recently been good and focused and I’m hoping we carry that focus and good energy into Wednesday.”
