Cross country wins big at Bishop Miege
The cross country competed at Bishop Miege High School on Saturday, Sept. 10. The team participated in boys varsity, girls varsity, boys C Team, and girls C team. Head coach Katie Wilber thinks the meet went really well.
“I felt like they did really well … a De Soto runner won all four races we were entered in,” Wilber said. “It was nice that they got to go to a meet where they got to really show what they were made of.”
Junior Gabby Collins won the girls varsity race with a time of 21:08, and sophomore Sam Hubert won the boy’s varsity race with a time of 17:49. The whole boys varsity team got first place and instead of a plaque, they won a watermelon trophy.
Sadly, the girls team did not place overall because they were short one runner from qualifying as a team.
“Everybody ran pretty well. It gives us a confidence boost, everyone realizes how well they could actually do,” Collins said.
Wilber agrees that this meet helped the whole team’s confidence.
“I think it gave the kids some confidence that they needed, [our first meet] had a ton of competition; 4A, 5A, 6A and Missouri schools,” Wilber said. “ So it was great for them to see some of the competition, but it was also nice for them to get to go to [the Bishop Miege meet] where they got to really show what they were made of.”
Both C teams had first place finishers too. Freshman Chase Culver won with a time of 19:45, and freshman Lane Heilman barely beat freshman Erin Pickert with times of 25:02:11 and 25:02:95.`
The team’s next meet is at Wyandotte County Park on Sept. 17.
