Wrestling team competes at Eudora tournament
The De Soto High School wrestling team placed sixteenth overall at a tournament in Eudora on Dec. 11-12.
The tournament included some tough competition, “with multiple state ranked teams,” according to head coach Shannon Sawner.
Along with placing sixteenth as a team, the Wildcats also had six wrestlers place overall in the tournament. Chase Carter and Michael Zuchowski placed eighth in their weight groups, Jackson McQuality and Nate Panagakis placed seventh, Lawson Marshall placed fourth and Caleb Mcquality placed third.
Marshall was hoping to place higher than fourth, but his competitor outdid him in the fourth place match.
“I could have done better, but the kid that beat me just had better technique,” Marshall said.
On the other hand, Caleb was proud to get third place at the tournament.
“I got third in the tournament so I did pretty well. I didn’t have the hardest seed in the bracket, but it’s still third,” Caleb said. “I think the team overall did pretty well.”
The team is looking forward to the season to come and hope to make some State appearances.
“I hope to place again at the next tournament. I hope a lot of people from our team keep progressing and qualify for State this year,” Caleb said.
The next tournament for the varsity wrestling team is the Johnson County classic at Blue Valley High School on Dec. 18-19.
According to Sawner, they are hoping for “pins and wins!”
