Football helps with cereal bowl
Recently, the De Soto High School football team helped with a fundraiser at DHS.
“It was a fundraiser for a food pantry to collect dry goods and cereal for families in need,” said varsity football coach Brian King.
Although the football team helped with the event, the project itself was not the team’s idea.
“It was actually our sixth grade youthball. It is something they do every year and this year they decided to ask us to get involved and we were more than happy to,” King said.
The football team does other community service projects as well and is open to anything that helps the community.
“We are always looking for community service projects. We have done some work at the cemetery, and we hope to send out some care packages out to Afghanistan,” King said. “Anything we can come up with at our quarterback club and football program to help the community.”
Sophomores Darren Winans and Mason Taulbee were some of the volunteers at the event.
“I loved watching the future of De Soto football compete and display their athletic ability,” Winans said.
The two would like to do it again in the future. According to Winans “it’s for a good cause and it’s a fun way for the youth to interact with the older guys.”
Taulbee also enjoyed working with the youth.
“I played with little kids and it was fun,” Taulbee said.
In addition to helping others, King enjoys bringing the youth of De Soto together.
“Our kids brought food. It’s a cool way to wrap up the season and play with the little guys. It’s nice to come together as a whole and be one,” King said. “If you’re a Wildcat I don’t care if you’re a third grader or a senior you should all be a part of the same family. It’s nice to end the season with a bang and for a good cause. We hope to have the rest of the youth teams there in the future.”
