Varsity boys’ soccer beats out Ottawa
The Boys’ Varsity Soccer team won yet another game for the week over Ottawa High School in a 2-0 decision on Sept. 29. Seniors Luke Zoller, Austin Culver and Noah Lamar all had major contributions to last night’s success. Even though OHS had several more opportunities to score, DHS was still able to put another shutout on the season.
Before the first goal, DHS had several drives that couldn’t find the net. OHS senior goalie Patrick Conroy had a respectable game, putting up several saves on the night, and he was able to keep the score low enough to give his team a fighting chance for the first ten minutes.
“Our goalkeeper had some huge, huge saves, and it could have been a lot worse without our keeper,” said OHS head coach Daniel Nathan.
However, seniors Austin Culver and Luke Zoller quickly capitalized on a throw-in to bring the score to 1-0 at the 28:05 minute mark.
“When I laid it off to Austin Culver, it gave us some momentum,” Zoller said.
From that point, it seemed like DHS took control of the game. While OHS did have some drives down to the goal, De Soto capitalized on every chance it could get and played on the opposing side of the field for most of the game. Zoller made a goal that was called offsides at the 2:43 minute mark, and sophomore Ethan Rodriguez drove down the field several times but DHS could not seize the opportunities he provided.
This proved to be the theme for the second half as well. DHS continued to control the game, but had several missed opportunities. Senior Noah Lamar had several drives down the field and came close to extending the lead; Zoller and Culver did as well, but they were pushed out by Conroy and the OHS defense.
That is, until the 9:47 minute mark, when Culver put up his second goal on the night with a bouncing kick into the net.
With the score at 2-0, DHS held OHS scoreless for the rest of the half and was able to get another win and shutout on the week.
Despite the loss, OHS coach Daniel Nathan remains optimistic and is even proud of the way his team played.
“As far as I’m concerned, De Soto is the best team in the league, and if we play like that against them we have nothing to fear until we see them again at home,” Nathan said.
Coming off of two wins for the week, DHS will now prepare for their next match against Eudora High School at Eudora on Oct. 5.
