JV volleyball is off to a strong start
The De Soto High School junior varsity volleyball team is currently the best JV team in the Frontier League.
The team, coached by Jenny Barnhart, has only one loss throughout the entire season so far.
The team has a total of four freshmen, four sophomores and two juniors.
The girls play well together and communicate on the court, which helps them do their best against competition they face.
Freshman hitter Haley Cuba is excited to see how the rest of the season plays out.
“We play together like we have been together for multiple years,” Cuba said. “We all get along, so it’s really fun.”
Although they have lost a game, Haley is still confident they will finish the season with a great record.
“If we do our best, we can win, and we can beat the remaining teams,” Cuba said.
Kirstin Cuba, Haley’s sister, is a junior and is the captain of the JV squad.
“The team is a lot of fun, and I enjoy playing with everyone on the team,” Kirstin said.
Kirstin has the same goal as her sister: to keep winning and preserve their streak.
“I’m hoping we can continue our streak and keep a good record,” Kirstin said. “And have fun while doing it.”
The team has a mid season record of 18-1, their sole loss coming from Saint Thomas Aquinas in a close match.
STA is a 5A school with a nationally recognized history in volleyball.
The Saints varsity volleyball team is the defending state champion since last seasons win over the St. James Academy volleyball team.
The Wildcats fought the Saints, but lost in two sets 15-25 and 22-25.
The Lady Cats play only three more conference matches this season, facing Baldwin on the Sept. 29th, Ottawa on Oct. 13th and Spring Hill on Oct. 20th.
The Spring Hill match is the final game of the Junior Varsity season.
The girls hope to finish the season as the best team in the league, playing hard and having fun while doing it.
