De Soto High School’s girls’ tennis team has had a successful season, with doubles team Taylor Hanson and Olivia Young going 6-0 in the first half of the season.

While Hanson and Young were eventually defeated at Baldwin High School and Heston High School, the team still has high hopes for the season.

With the team being halfway through the varsity season Hanson and Young are looking forward to improving.

“We want to improve our communication, both on the court and off,” said Young.

Coach Justin Hoffman believes while Hanson and Young have room for improvement, their communication skills are already strong.

“Liv and Taylor have played together for 3 years, they know each other’s strengths and weaknesses, I don’t have to do a lot of talking with them,” said Hoffman.

Hanson and Young are not the only doubles pair on the team. Although it is their first year together, sophomore Reagan Ramsdell and junior Emily Euler have still found success on the court.

“I just started playing with Emily and every match we’re getting a lot better together,” said Ramsdell.

However, there are difficulties involved in starting with a new doubles partner.

“The other doubles team [Ramsdell and Euler] is a challenge, it will take some time to get chemistry and each other’s flow of the game down together,” said Hoffman.

Even though the tennis team is having great success, their season is being disrupted by uncertainty. The team may have to move to the 5A league.

“Competing against teams, being the smallest 5A is difficult in any sports because of the numbers of athletes available. … In 5A it would be a harder task to qualify for state,” said Hoffman.

Despite these setbacks, the team is determined to succeed.

“We are hoping we can go farther in the season, try to make it to state and get more wins,” said Hanson.
