DHS track takes third in girls, boys league

Last week at the Frontier League track meet at Spring Hill High School, De Soto High School placed third in both girls and boys divisions. Several students had significant improvement and victories. While the team hoped to do better at League, they mostly focused on improving themselves to prepare for Regionals and State.

“[League} isn’t really the big deal. We’re waiting for next Friday, for Regionals,” said throwing coach Roxanne Grizzle.

Several students did manage to improve their event score, such as junior Chandler Fairbanks in the triple jump.

In the triple jump event, the athlete gets a running start and then jumps three times to build momentum into their final jump. Fairbanks jumped 12.33 meters to break his personal record.

“I PR-ed [broke his personal record] by almost a foot, it felt good. It’s exciting to PR,” Fairbanks said.

Senior Tori Marshall also had a good day, winning League in the girls 100-meter dash with 13.22 seconds, the 200-meter dash with 27.03 seconds and the 400-meter dash with a time of 59.92 seconds.

Senior Dallas Robinson cannot be overlooked either after winning boys high jump with a 1.93 meter jump, a personal record for him as well.

Junior Travis Hodge also earned DHS tournament points with his performance in the boys 1600 meter, after beating the second finisher by almost 20 seconds with a time of 4 minutes and 23 seconds.

Looking forward to Regional and State, the track coaches are optimistic to their performance, but it is clear that their goals are not singularly winning meets, rather breaking personal records and making an enjoyable experience for their athletes.
