For many high school athletes, signing with a college to play a sport they love is a dream. For two De Soto High School students, that dream came true on Nov. 12.

Senior Megan Bonar signed with the University of South Dakota for basketball, and senior Greyson Jenista signed with Wichita State University for baseball.

Last May, Jenista and the DHS baseball team won the 4A State Championship.

“[Before leaving De Soto,] I’m hoping for another State title,” Jenista said.

As for Bonar, she is confident in her decision to play at USD.

“The campus was beautiful. It was far away from home but not too far. The coaches are phenomenal and all the girls [on the team] are super welcoming,” Bonar said.

Although she was confident in her decision at the signing, Bonar had put a lot of thought into her choice

“This is the rest of my life basically … [I was] conflicted on if this was the school for me. There were all these questions running through my head, and it just made me really think about it. I continued to visit other schools and decided South Dakota was the one,” Bonar said.

Unlike most student athletes, Bonar had the opportunity to be coached by her dad, Jim Bonar, on her high school team.

“She’s worked very, very hard and sacrificed an awful lot. Growing up, when kids were going to birthday parties and going swimming at the pool she was always in a tournament somewhere or practicing, so she definitely earned it,” Jim said.

Traditionally, athletes will sign with colleges in February or March. However, Bonar and Jenista were both very confident in their decisions to sign early, in November.

“I committed a few years ago so it was just simple for me to sign early,” Jenista said.

Jenista knew WSU was the school for him from watching games since he was little.

“I grew up going to games [at Wichita] as a kid, and I always wanted to be a [WSU] Shocker and play there,” Jenista said.

Bonar’s reason for signing early differed from Jenista’s.

“I wanted to get it over with. I wanted to make it official, in case I got injured or something so I already had that paper signed,” Megan said.

Jenista and Bonar both have confidence and high hopes for their futures in college sports.
