The girls’ volleyball team won first in the Rossville Invitational Tournament, Sept. 20,a tournament that involved teams as far away as Holton, Kansas.
The team won 12 straight sets in order to reach its final opponent, Clay Center High School, to win the championship.
“We were mentally tough all day, and it didn’t even feel like we played six whole games,” said senior outside hitter Tessa Phongsavath.
The team was very excited to win the Rossville Tournament, a precursor to the Sub-State tournament on Oct. 25.
“It was really exciting to win the tournament, we had a lot of energy,” said senior outside hitter Morgan Stonestreet.
This tournament is the first championship the team has won under head coach Lindsey Hothan.
The volleyball team currently is considered second in the Frontier League after its loss to Louisburg on Sept. 23.
“We have a lot to get better on from that game,” head coach Lindsey Hothan said.
Looking forward to Sub-State, the volleyball team hopes to meet the standards they set previously in the season.
“My expectation for the rest of the season is that they continue to meet that standard and stay focused in all their games,” Hothan said.
The team has many games to play before its Sub-State contention, but the overall attitude is optimistic.
“The competition will be pretty stiff, but if we play our best game, I think we’ll have a pretty good shot of making it to State,” Stonestreet said.
As of now, the team’s overall record is 17-7.
