The varsity boys’ baseball team faced off against Spring Hill on April 8.
Going into the game, the team hoped to get a sweep. They also hoped to “play up to their potential.”
“We haven’t swept in a long time, and our coaches told us that we needed to get a sweep, so our goal was to sweep them,” said senior varsity member Dylan Holden.
The team fulfilled that goal as they did in fact sweep both games. In the first game, the team won with a score of 9-1. The next game had the players winning 7-1.
“We got our first win of the year; that was important. We came out really strong and hit well. In the field, we were pretty much sound,” said senior varsity member Mitch Gehrt.
Overall, the team thought that the game was an improvement over how they did in their previous game against Shawnee Mission South on April 5, of which they lost 9-1.
“Pitching was a lot better, hitting was better and our defense was awesome,” Holden said.
Players thought that Spring Hill was a good opponent to have, however some think that they were not the most formidable opponent.
“They are one of the easier ones,”Gehrt said. “We have a pretty stocked schedule. They are a good team, though.”
“They are a good team, but I think that we were just a better team that day,” Holden said.
Holden believes that the team needs to improve upon “base running” and “not doing dumb stuff on the field and making stupid mistakes.”
“Just the little things; you know we dropped a ball in the outfield that could have been caught,” Gehrt said.
Gehrt believes that the win “definitely boosts” the team’s confidence, however.
“After Saturday, we didn’t play up to our potential, and I think this really started us off on the right way.”
The team’s next game will occur on April 10 against Blue Valley North High School.
