While many high school athletes expect to receive scholarships for more traditional sports, like baseball or volleyball, there are still many that receive scholarships for more unexpected athletics.
Along with going to Kansas State University to study Dietetics senior Elaina Grantham will be part of the K-State rowing team.
“I’ve never been interested in it until I received a letter from K-State my junior year,” Grantham said. “I was really hesitant about it until I toured the facilities and met the team and coaches. Then I knew I’d really enjoy it.”
The Kansas State rowing team has always maintained a standard of excellence, just recently finish their fall season strong.
Despite her lack of rowing experience, Grantham has high hopes for her performance.
“Well I’ve never rowed in my life,” Grantham said. “And the majority of girls that row haven’t either, so I don’t really know exactly how to prepare, but I’m working out daily just to stay in shape.”
As great as getting a scholarship is there are still many more benefits to being recruited by a college.
“Well athletes at any school seem to just kind of get special privileges,” Grantham said. “Like sports game tickets and special tutors.”
Grantham continued, “Also, all of the athletes at K-State get to eat together at a place called the performance table five times a week. It’s like a gourmet restaurant specifically catered to your nutritional needs.”
While the sports tickets and special dining are good and all, there’s still something to be appreciated in the unity of the team.
“Working out and competing with girls similar to me will be a great experience.”
