This year in order to give more recognition to senior athletes the administration has made changes to the process of seniors signing with colleges. In the past, seniors who plan on continuing with athletics at a college level would have an individual signing cermony that would take place in the media center.
“Coaches have said that in the past everyone was squeezed into the library and either it was too crowded or hardly anyone showed up. There was also an issue with kids being late to practices after school,” said Activities Directior John Sedler.
To fix these problems the administration felt that it would be nice to have an official signing day where all athletes who will be continuing on at the collge level are recognized. By doing this more people can be attracted to the event and more school spirit can be created.
“When someone has a success we want everyone to support that person, not just their friends. We want it to be so that when one Wildcat does well everyone can feel it,” Sedler said.
Originally the administration wanted the seniors to have their ceremony on the national signing day which was February 5, but due to the snow days the event had to be rescheduled.
On Feburary 12 five of the six seniors who will be continuing on to play at the collegiante level had their signing ceremony in the auditorium joined by coaches, family members, and fellow students who gave their support. Each senior was called up on stage and was recognized for their athletic and academic accomplishments as well as their contributions to the school.
Senior Cassidy Berry signed to play softball at Emporia, Mitch Brandenburg signed to play foot ball at the University of Staint Mary, Dylan Holden signed to play baseball at Emporia, Ashley Mars signed to paly softball at Cowley College and Max Taulbee signed to run cross country at Emporia. Jared Jennings has also signed to play football at Bethany but he was unable to attend the signing ceremony.
All athletes shared their favorite memories of high school and gave advice to the underclassmen.
“Work hard everyday in what you love to do. You don’t want to ask yourself ‘what if’ when you are a senior and regret not working hard,” Mars said.
After the ceremony cake was served and students who came to support their friends were released early from school.
