The De Soto High School track and field team recently wrapped up its regular season.

Compared to other schools, this season’s track team was small.  The team had 70 participants on this year’s team with 25-30 athletes continuing to the postseason.

“We have only a few people on the team but they are fantastic,” senior Brent Johnson said.

The spring weather affected this season a lot. At one point, the runners had to clear snow off of the track for practice.

“The weather has been horrible, but the kids have been extremely positive,” coach Chris McAffee said.

Though the weather was bad, the team was able to have a very successful season. The team placed in every meet they competed in. The guys’ team won the Mill Valley High School meet and placed fourth in the Frontier League. The girls’ team finished third at the league meet.

Moving into the postseason, the team set some goals. On the guys’ side, they hope to bring home a trophy from Regionals and make a grab a State trophy as well.

“We are going to have to have some really good performances, but we have some guys that can score well,” McAffee said.

On the girls’ side, the team hopes to build experience in the young team.

“The girls are pretty young and to get them down there for the State meet will be beneficial to them next year,” McAffee said.

The team faced bad weather this spring but were able to push through with a solid performance as a team at league.
