The De Soto High School baseball team had a challenging start due to the late spring this year.

When tryouts began, there was snow on the ground and very low temperatures. Due to weather issues, many games were rescheduled.

Even with all the rain and snow, the Wildcats finished the regular season with a winning record of 12-6. They finished third in a shortened Frontier League schedule, and won the Frontier/Kaw Valley League Challenge Tournament.

The team played out-of-league teams such as Mill Valley High School and Bonner Springs High School and it finished with a record of 5-3 in nonleague games.

“Our team chemistry is a plus, our pitching has been outstanding along with our defense and our bats are really heating up at the right time…Our goal for the postseason is to win Regionals,” head coach Joel Thaemert said.

The seniors have a lot of experiences and are guiding the team to the post-season.

Seniors Noah Cardiff, Corbin Clark, Blake Davis, Austin Gilbert, Jonny Hodges, Isaac Lueth and Josh Pasley have all had tremendous impact on the team.

“They have been instrumental in leading our team in a positive direction with their play and their attitudes. I’m very proud of this group and we have had a lot of fun,” Thaemert said.

The Wildcat’s first Regional game was against Basehor-Linwood High School on May 13. They won the game 8-3. After the game, the team advanced to play against Baldwin High School on May 15. Results were unavailable at the time of publication.
