De Soto High School hosted a girls’ tennis tournament on Sept. 22. The team earned third place overall, and come out with a second place singles player and seventh place doubles team.
Senior Paige Williams placed second for singles in last weekend’s tournament. She lost to Kansas City Christian’s 3A State champion Sara Goodwin in the finals.
“I really liked playing against [Goodwin] her,” Williams said. “She plays a completely different kind of game. She’s got a lot of top spin.”
In addition to Williams, seniors Stephanie Hinchey and Olivia Cline placed in the tournament. As a doubles team, the girls placed seventh.
“We have made a lot of improvement. This is the best we’ve done all season,” Hinchey said.
Cline also thought they performed well.
“Stephanie and I kicked some butt. There are some things that we need to improve, but for a first-time double team, I thought we did really well,” Cline said.
As an overall team, DHS placed third.
“The team played really well. We have made a lot of progress,” said head coach Justin Hoffman. “If this tournament would have been earlier in the season, we wouldn’t have done as well as we did.”
This tournament was the last home meet the team has for this season. Their next meet will be the Bonner Springs Invitational on Sept. 27.
