On March 31, 2012, thousands of fans flooded Massachusetts Street in Lawrence, Kan. Jayhawk fans are expected to do the same tonight for the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship game.
The University of Kansas opened Allen Fieldhouse for Kansas fans to watch the game vs. Ohio State on the giant video board. Admission was free, concessions were sold, and the pep band, spirit squads and mascots were all in attendance. Seating was based on a first-come, first-serve basis.
By the 7:49 p.m. game-time, the field house was filled and Kansas fans were as loud and energetic as if the game was played at home.
As KU battled back from Ohio State’s 13-point lead, the level of excitement grew and fans were out of their seats. The game stayed tight the rest of the game and in the last minutes, Travis Releford made two free-throw shots putting Kansas ahead 60-59. Jeff Withey swatted the ball away from Ohio State’s next possession and Elijah Johnson made a layup putting the Jayhawks in the lead by three points. William Buford from Ohio State then made a dunk and trailed behind Kansas with only one point. Seven seconds were left in the game when Lenzelle Smith, Jr. fouled Kansas player Tyshawn Taylor who made both free-throw shots. With two seconds left, Releford fouled Aaron Craft who made his first free throw. On the second, due to a lane violation, the ball was turned over and the Jayhawks advanced to the championship game with a score of 64-62.
Allen Fieldhouse went crazy and although the court was guarded and blocked off, fans stormed the court. Lawrence became complete chaos. Massachusetts Street became a river of people and traffic was at a stand-still.
Kentucky fans celebrated their victory over Louisville in a similar manner however, the Wildcats’ celebration turned into more of a riot. Bonfires were built and cars were flipped. In contrast, the Jayhawks partied in a more responsible manner and the university promoted the safety of fans.
For KU’s ninth national title game in school history, Allen Fieldhouse will be open to the public again. The doors will open at 7 p.m. for the 8:23 p.m. tip-off. The Jayhawks will be playing against the Kentucky Wildcats at the Superdome in New Orleans. Rock Chalk!
