On Feb. 7, 2012, the varsity boys basetball team took Ottawa High School by surprise, defeating them 63 to 47. Ottawa was undefeated all season, until they faced off against DHS. Senior Mason Wedel led the team scoring 20 points. Senior Joey Johnson scored 15 points, and senior T.J. Crow scored 13 points.
“The team was not particularly on their game when it came to shooting, but our defense made it hard for them [Ottawa], and we did not make it easy for them to shoot,” head coach Matt Rice said.
At the beginning of the game, DHS was down 10-3, and OHS played a very physical game, making it difficult for DHS to play and make the shots they wanted.
Ottawa sophomore Semi Ojeleye did not make it easy for DHS. Senior John Williams had the pleasure of being on main defense against Ojeleye who is 6’ 7″, and Williams being 6’ 2″, yet it was the whole team’s job to keep Ojeleye from shooting.
In the end, DHS won, but it was a challenge. Ottawa went down fighting and DHS is now preparing for better teams in the Frontier league.
