On Jan. 6, the De Soto High School varsity basketball teams played their league rival, Eudora High School. Like the gymnastics battle between the student sections during timeouts, both games were equally intense.
The varsity girls faced tough competition, but went into the locker room up 17-9. In the beginning of the second half, De Soto widened the gap, but lost momentum towards the end of the third quarter. Eudora got within seven points. The team had a hard time finding open opportunities from the 3-point arc and getting it inside to freshman Megan Bonar.
In the last three minutes of the game, Eudora tried to come back, but had to foul repeatedly in order to get that chance. With over 10 fouls in the last three minutes of play, De Soto was in the double bonus which helped to secure the 39-28 win. The team is now 5-2.
Next, the varsity boys took the court for a game that, if history was any indication, was going to be an extremely tough and physical match up.
The first half, the score went back and forth with Eudora leading by one at the end of the first quarter, but De Soto taking the lead 16-13 at halftime. At the end of the third quarter, the score was tied at 23. However, the team gained the momentum it needed when senior Mason Wedel stole the ball and ran back for a lay-up.
In the fourth quarter, Eudora fouled six more times putting
De Soto in the double bonus. The final score was De Soto 40, Eudora 37.
The next game for both teams is on Jan. 9 at home against Spring Hill. The girls varsity plays at 7 p.m. followed by the boys varsity at 8:30.
