The De Soto High School cross country team is having another successful year as the State meet draws closer.
At the Frontier League meet on Oct. 13, 2011, the girls placed third, and for the third time in five years, the boys were named League champions.
Individually, junior Angel Vasquez placed first, junior Diego Sanchez placed fourth and senior Philip Kaul placed fifth. They all earned first team All-League Honors. Earning second team honors were junior Chad Ollendick and sophomore Teddy Koehler. Junior Jacob Scott and freshman Nathan Zwahlen earned third-team honors.
For the girls, freshman Meredith Wolfe earned first team All-League honors, sophomore Rebekah Burgweger earned second team, and senior Jordan Kline earned third team All-League honors.
On Oct. 22, 2011 at the Regional meet, the team also had a very strong showing. Overall, the girls placed second and the boys place first. The boys have placed first four meets in a row. Because both boys and girls as a team placed in the top three teams, they both qualify for the State meet.
In the top 20 for the girls, Burgweger placed fifth, Kline placed 13th and Wolfe placed 16th.
For the boys, Vasquez placed first being only three seconds from a school record, Sanchez placed sixth, Kaul placed 10th, Koehler placed 12th and Ollendick placed 17th.
“The guys gave a solid and consistent performance… and the girls have been training really well so it was nice to see what we see in practice… This is a good omen for the end of the season,” said head coach Chris McAfee.
The State meet will be on Oct. 29, 2011 at the Wamego Country Club. The girls will run at 10 a.m. with awards at 12:30 p.m., while the boys will run at 11:30 a.m. with awards at 12:45 p.m
