This summer, the new movie “Twisters” came to the big screen and enthralled viewers. The movie is a standalone sequel to the original “Twister”. Made in 1996, the original was an action-packed adventure and created an almost cult-like following of fans.
The new film follows a similar but not identical plot. The story follows Kate Carter, played by Daisy Edgar-Jones, as she attempts to “tame a tornado”. Javi, played by Anthony Ramos, is a long time friend to Kate and convinces her to come back to tornado chasing after she suffered a horrible tragedy. Finally, Tyler Owens, played by Glen Powell, better known as the “Tornado Wrangler”, and love interest to Kate, helps her to achieve her dream of “taming a tornado”.
Personally, I found this movie to be one of the most engaging, interesting movies of the summer. The plot was filled with the perfect mixture of action, romance, and drama filled scenes. The movie featured a multitude of tornados, placed at the ideal moment, to give the viewer maximum fear, anticipation, and suspense all rolled into one. There were moments in the movie where I questioned if a main character would survive a tornado.
The characters were flawlessly cast. Both Glen Powell and Daisy Edgar-Jones perfectly encapsulated their characters expressing both swagger and vulnerability, bravado and kindness. The subplot of the characters’ subtle romance throughout the movie left viewers wanting more: more screen time, more tornados, and more time together.
Another amazing feature of this movie was the soundtrack. I loved the vibe that the music gave and how it completely fit each scene. My personal favorite was “Ain’t No Love in Oklahoma” by Luke Combs, with “Ain’t in Kansas Anymore” by Miranda Lambert a close second. I found that both songs enhanced the country feeling expressed throughout the movie without being overwhelming in any genre.
Furthermore, the movie’s subtle references to the original were perfect. The way the movie incorporated the original “Dorothy” into the plot and made other references to “The Wizard of Oz” delighted fans of the original. The movie also developed its own plot that was similar to the original but different enough that it couldn’t be considered a remake.
I personally also loved that “Twisters” made a reference to the devastating 2013 El Reno tornado and paid homage to the absolute disaster and devastation that tornadoes cause.
Overall, I believe “Twisters” was the best movie of the summer, possibly of the year. The movie incorporated all the best elements of action and romance while including tornadoes and I desperately hope that they make a second one.
