As the holiday season approaches, we notice how businesses and families immediately get into the Christmas spirit after Halloween: but what about Thanksgiving? Stores don’t put out Thanksgiving decorations often, and almost nobody decorates at home, but why?
For some students, ignoring Thanksgiving altogether does not bother them but others it does.
Senior Jessie Wright believes when and how to decorate should be a personal decision.
“It’s their choice and I’m not allowed to interfere with their decisions,” senior Wright said.
Others take into account the history of the holiday.
“I don’t mind it because I see Thanksgiving as a uniquely national holiday for the United States, whereas Christmas is a worldwide holiday celebrated nationally, [not to mention] the true history of Thanksgiving is very grim,”sophomore Matthew Barber said.
On the opposite end of the spectrum, students believe that people should decorate and celebrate Thanksgiving.
“It doesn’t make any sense in my opinion. To be honest [stores] put out Christmas decorations before Halloween decorations [anyway,] and it makes it seem like we don’t celebrate each holiday with as much importance,” senior Ryan Sturdy said.
When it comes to the amount of attention given to a holiday, money could be a big factor for businesses..
“Everyone forgets Thanksgiving, stores don’t make as much money off it, and it should just be food, no decorations,” senior Cameron McCollum said.
AVID and Political Participation teacher Ryan Robie agrees.
“Thanksgiving is not as big of a holiday, and not as much money put into it, so I’m good with it,” Robie said.
However, the meaning behind the holiday could be a good argument for decorating and celebrating..
“Thanksgiving is a wonderful holiday about being thankful and amazing food and that deserves to be celebrated too, and we should decorate for Thanksgiving, with amazing food of course,” PE teacher Junelle Woolery said.
Junior Quin Hadley agrees.
“I feel like Thanksgiving is an institute and an amazing [day] that you gather with your family and friends on,” Hadley said.
Whether or not stores decorate for Thanksgiving, many students agree that they need to hold off on Christmas decorations.
“There just aren’t decorations for Thanksgiving, and stores should wait until after Halloween to put out Christmas decorations,” Freshman Elodie Monroe said.
Thanksgiving is an important holiday to the United States and should be celebrated, but decorating for the holiday is truly up to each individual, and their beliefs.
