Staff reviews Stranger Things season two

After a successful first season to its science fiction show set in the 1980s, Netflix filmed season two of Stranger Things and released it on Oct. 27.

Season one of the hit show came out in the summer of 2016, allotting many students at De Soto the time to binge-watch all eight episodes without regret or loss of sleep. However, releasing the show three days before Halloween may have presented some difficulties for students to engulf the show in one sitting.

In the two weeks since its release, many fans have managed to watch the entire second season, and many have been excited to discuss one of Netflix’s most thrilling and engaging original series.

Some members of The Green Pride staff watched Stranger Things season two and gave opinions and thoughts on characters, plot and more. Warning: there are some spoilers ahead.

Q: Many viewers are immediately interested in the love triangle between Steve, Jonathan and Nancy, and its development in both seasons. Are you a bigger fan of Steve or Jonathan?

Keegan Wahlmeier: “Last season, you were cheering against Steve. Like, you didn’t want Steve to be that guy [with Nancy]. But then you see him progress this season, and [you change your mind]. Steve also kind of becomes an older brother of Dustin.”

Abby Smith: “My favorite character is Steve because I like how his character has developed throughout the season. Instead of just being a static character, he’s become really dynamic and it’s really interesting to watch his relationship with the kids, especially in season two, how he becomes more of a babysitter, and it’s just really fun to see him progress.” Thinking about it, Smith added, “It’s the hair. The hair.”

Ellie Fowks: “I don’t have a reason, but I just like Jonathan better. I just like him as a person. I think he’s a good character and cares more about Nancy, and they would be really good together.”

Clara Sloan: “I feel like Nancy and Jonathan belong together, because they’re both so annoying, but I like Steve more now. I liked Jonathan before, but Steve is just real.”

Q: What scenes stood out to you the most in season two?

Clara Sloan: “The one with Billy and his dad, when his dad was beating him up. Not that it was a good scene, but it showed why Billy was the way he was. I feel like that was really good of them to show.”

Keegan Wahlmeier: “[I love the scene where Eleven] throws the dog-beast through the window and then she shows up and immediately hugs Mike.”

Abby Smith: “[The scene that I liked] started really sad when Dustin didn’t have anyone to dance with at the Snow Ball, and I liked when Nancy came over and danced with him because it was just a really cute scene that could be relatable to some viewers and it was just super cute to show that side of Nancy and that side of Dustin.”

Q: Is there anything that you didn’t like about the second season?

Ellie Fowks: “I think that the second season was too action-based. I liked getting to know the characters better and seeing friendships develop and seeing them develop as characters, rather than just a whole bunch of fighting. I still really like the second season, but I wish that it wasn’t so action-y.”

Abby Smith: “The Stand Alone episode, I think, was unnecessary in that part [adding new characters], but I did like to see in that episode how easy it is for Eleven to turn evil. They showed that she has the power and she has the capability to use her powers for evil, but instead she chose to use them for good, which I think furthers her character a lot more. Also, that whole episode just had a different aesthetic from the entire show, and it was confusing.”

Q: Any other comments?

Abby Smith: “Why did [Bob] stop? When you escape, you keep running, you keep running for miles, you don’t just stop.”

Abby Smith: “I feel bad for Will. Will has been through so much. Someone needs to give that kid a break. Like, he just needs a long nap. A long, undisturbed nap.”

When voting, The Green Pride staff decided that Nancy and Jonathan were a better couple than Nancy and Steve.

In regards to most missed character, the staff voted that Barbara Holland deserved a shout out, followed by Bob Newby and the Demogorgon. However, nobody was particularly reminiscent of the scientist who died in the first two minutes of episode one.

While there were some minor critiques about season two, the biggest complaint among Stranger Things fans is having to wait for season three, which is currently set to be released in the fall of 2018.
