DHS student section hasn’t reached its potential

Rewind to the Sept. 18 football game against Saint James Academy. It was my first time to be a part of the student section, rather than just on the sidelines. I could not have been more excited.
As the game went on I was more and more disappointed, not in the football game, but in the student section. I was discovering that some in our student section lacks class and spirit.
To begin with, it is all fun and games to have a theme to dress up to, but those themes should stick to things like whiteout or USA. They should not turn into ways to make fun of and encourage stereotypes.
Nor should there be any question as to “Was that us?” when two shots rang out during The Star Spangled Banner or canisters of food that are made to look like other more illicit substances.
Also, “You can’t do that” and “Scoreboard” chants are fun and playful, but there is a time for them. There is no need for consistent degradation of the other team when they are already behind. These chants are fine, but the constant use of them contributes to the overall poor reputation of the student section, according to some students and parents.
Additionally, the student section sometimes lacks spirit. It might exist at the very beginning of the game or when we are winning, but the second the other team scores or we fall behind the spirit and excitement ceases to exist.
The students should keep the excitement up and support the team even when they do not have the best record, such as when the football team went 0-9 and the size of the student section quickly dwindled.
Most importantly, there should be a student section at more than just football and basketball games.
Students should show up to soccer, volleyball, tennis, golf and every other athletic event. More than that, students should be present at theater productions and band and choir concerts too.
Students should support all other student activities with equal enthusiasm, not just football. Everyone wants to feel supported, even the other people in different activities.
Ultimately the De Soto High School student section has a lot of changes to consider if it wants to be one that other schools admire.

Personally, I know the football team really appreciates our student section. I don’t think I agree with a single thing written in that article. The support and spirit is amazing this year. I would recommend going to more than one game in the student section before saying stuff like that. Much appreciation to the student section this year. I can speak for the team by saying we really do love all the spirit and support.
