This year, members of the De Soto High School Student Council and administrative staff came to the decision to have the Homecoming dance on a Saturday.
Previously, the dance has been held on the Friday night after the football game. Last Spring, Principal Mark Meyer spoke to members of StuCo about moving the dance to Saturday and keeping the dance semi-formal.
“I was willing to compromise. The compromise is this: I don’t care whether it’s the Queen dance or the Homecoming dance, but I’d like to keep one of them on the night of a game,” Meyer said.
In the past, many students have complained about Homecoming being held directly after the game rather than the next day.
Students did not like having the dance on Friday night since spectators, members of the band, cheerleaders, dancers and the football players would have to go home, get ready and then return to the dance after it had begun.
The Green Pride staff has agreed that having the dance on a Saturday was a successful solution to the problem. StuCo also thought it was successful because it gave them more time to set up and decorate for the dance.
The majority of the student body would say that they liked that the dance on Saturday, but many did not like all of the music choices.
Many songs were deemed as inappropriate, and some students were unhappy that they couldn’t dance in a way that they wanted to. Although this doesn’t apply to everyone that was there, this was the biggest complaint about the dance.
For the most part, the dance went very well this year, and The Green Pride staff agreed that the Homecoming dance should continue to be kept on a Saturday night.
