Rumors about next year’s nutrition break and bell schedule changes have been stirring around DHS.
Next year, there is a high possibility of nutrition break being removed from the DHS bell schedule. There will not be added time to classes; instead, the extra five minutes will be moved to Seminar. With these extra five minutes added, there will be two travel bells during seminar.
If nutrition break were to be eliminated and the extra five minutes were added to Seminar, a couple of benefits can be presented with this plan. Students would be offered the chance to attend two different classes. This offers students the option during Seminar of not being stuck in a monotone, boring, characterless and lifeless teacher’s room because he went in to ask a simple question. This new Seminar plan offers students a way out of this situation.
Although I can see benefits to this plan, it takes away our right to eat during nutrition break. How dare the administration threaten to take away the five minutes where we have a chatting session in the middle of the hallways, making a circle so wide that it might as well be a brick wall. How dare they take away our right to not do anything for five minutes. How dare they take away our right to eat highly “nutritious” food from the vending machines. How dare they. What is the world coming to?
But seriously, the only real cons I see to this whole situation are that those extra five minutes are five less minutes to print off the research paper that is due next hour.
On a similar note, adding an extra travel bell would be nice, but let’s be honest, how many students actually only go to one teacher, especially when you only need to ask one simple little question? As it is now, most students will simply stick their heads in the door, ask the question, and continue on their way.
Overall, changing the Seminar policy would be helpful for students that are required to stay in a teacher’s room during seminar even if he is going in there to ask one question. On the other hand, it does take out the necessary time during nutrition break to get last-minute homework done before upcoming classes.
After weighing all of the pros and cons, I would rather have my extra five minutes of nutrition break than my extra five minutes of Seminar. I actually use my nutrition break for academic reasons rather than socializing.
