Have you ever turned on a laptop at De Soto High School trying to type an essay for English class and the laptop will not turn on? This is caused by student abuse that frankly will not change and they are old and outdated.
Sure many would bring their own laptop to school so that they can do school work and avoid “Cannot find domain USD232.”
Personally, I would bring my laptop because I would be the only one using it and I know that it works. It would make so much more sense for students to use a computer that they know works instead of playing a guessing game.
Another reason we should be allowed to bring our own computers is because the censorship policy would still be in effect. District Wi-Fi would still have the same anti-Youtube, pornography and image searches just like it does on every other district computer.
It might take time for laptops and iPads to get connected to the network, but students use these devices and they have word processors and a version of PowerPoint or Key Note, so it would be crazy not to let students take advantage of technology they have access to.
To be honest, you can log on to the Internet, but we do not take advantage of it. My tablet is able connect to the Wi-Fi, but I can’t browse the internet to find how to find how many moles are in 30 grams of iron.
As a bonus, bringing our own computers would save the district a lot of space on their servers because the average Windows 7 computer has well over 100 gigabytes of space on the hard drive compared to the four gigabytes we are given on the server.
The district should run a trial after the holiday breaks to see if it improves productivity or causes more problems than there already are.
If it works, then problems will start to decrease, and that English paper will get done a little quicker with little to no errors. If it does not work, then we can put it to rest and come up with a better idea.
