Each year, new classes are added to De Soto High School’s course options, including many new engineering classes. This year, however, a new Video Production class has been added that brings videography to a whole new level at DHS.

With Photo Imaging and AV Production Fundamentals taught by journalism teacher Michael Sullivan, math teacher Katie Meserko, developed an interest in teaching a video production class, based off her own interest in photography and videography.

“This class has a lot of real world applications,” Meserko said. “This is a fast- paced class where students will learn a lot of skills ‘on the job.’”

For many students, this class has become a true opportunity for them to get better at something they are truly passionate about.

Senior Jacob Ward has always possessed an interest for cinematography and editing.

“For my classes, I always choose to do really elaborate things with videos from my past classes’ projects,” Ward said.

Aside from furthering the passions of students, the class also offers many benefits to DHS.

“We will get to make a lot of videos for the school ranging from pep assembly videos [to] showcasing the amazing things happening at DHS,” Meserko said.

Athletic Director Ryan Johnson also has his own plans when it comes to this newly added course.

“My plan is to grow student interest in student broadcasting and filming to have students recording games or band or choir performances to make it something families would like to watch. If we get enough students into it we could potentially create a class dedicated to filming those kinds of things,” Johnson said.

With DHS growing in numbers and ranges of interests, new classes such as this will provide more opportunities for  students.
