NHS donates time at De Soto Nursing Home for a day of bingo
De Soto High School’s National Honor Society dedicated its Saturday to the patients of the Hillside Village Nursing Home in De Soto for a day of bingo on Nov. 18.
NHS members spent the day talking with patients, playing bingo and running the game itself.
“It was just really fun to interact with people, and a lot of them had some really cool stories about their lives to share,” said NHS member junior Caroline Whipple.
“I think we had a big impact,” said NHS president senior Elizabeth Seidl. “It was really fun to see [the patients] get so excited.”
The club first began visiting the nursing home last year and plans to keep the tradition going.
According to Seidl, club sponsor Nancy Perry prefers to spend the first semester of service on local projects to get the new members easily involved.
“Last year we helped wash the fire trucks of De Soto,” Seidl said. “We might do something outside of De Soto next semester.”
As this was Whipple’s first experience with NHS, her impression of the club was nothing but positive.
“It’s a very welcoming group, and everyone who has been in it in previous years has been really nice,” Whipple said. “They just really are about getting involved with the community and setting a good example.”
NHS will visit the nursing home again on Dec. 2 for another day of bingo.
