This election season at De Soto High School, Student Council sponsors Katherine Meserko and Lori Hughes insittued a new process for choosing DHS’ StuCo president and vice president.

In previous years, StuCo president and vice president were chosen by the newly elected members of StuCo, not the whole school. This year, however, students who chose to run for president and vice president were told to prepare a speech that would be shown in every Seminar.

“We decided to have [the speeches] recorded so that they could be shown to each seminar and then students could travel to other classes. If we held an assembly, then it would have taken up too much time for students to travel there and back,” Meserko said. “We also recorded it so that any student who missed the video could watch it on their own before voting if they wanted to.”

Newly elected StuCo president Simon Couch thought that the new election process worked well.

“I thought it was a good way to  do  things,” Couch said. “This was the first year that all of the student body got to decide instead of just StuCo, so that was a bit disconcerting at first, but knowing I had the chance to say a few things before everyone voted was a comfort.”

The major benefit of the new election process was that all of DHS now had a voice in the election, according to Meserko.

“Since StuCo represents the whole student body, it only made sense for the whole student body to vote. The president and vice president will have important roles in helping to improve many of the activities we put on for the student body, so now all students can have a say on who represents them,” Meserko said.

Because the entirety of the student body voted, newly elected vice president Gabby Mallozzi felt very accomplished.

“I was excited and really thankful to all of the students when I found out that I was elected,” Mallozzi said.

According to Meserko, StuCo will continue to record speeches to show in seminar and allow the entire student body to vote on president and vice president due to the success of the new proces this year.
