The De Soto High School varsity Scholars Bowl team, consisting of seniors Kyle Wernimont, Morgan Darter, Samuel Seidel, Jaycie Thaemert, Emma Goldsby and Lexi Pasquale, won the Frontier League Championship at Louisburg on Monday, Jan. 11.

Scholars Bowl tournaments are academic competitions in which teams compete by answering questions from all areas of knowledge. At this particular competition, the varsity team went undefeated through six rounds of questions.

“I thought that we’d be successful, but I didn’t think that we’d be as successful as we were,” head coach Philip Hamilton said. “… I think that votes well for what we’re going to do moving forward.”

At the tournament, DHS’ varsity team had an average score per round of 108 points, whereas the second place teams’ highest score was only 90, 18 points below DHS’ average.

“We accomplished our first goal of winning the Frontier League title,” Hamilton said. “It was good for us to win one of our more prestigious tournaments,”

Two new DHS records were also set at the meet. The team scored a record-breaking 150 points in a single round, only missing one question.

In addition, the DHS school record for a five-player team at a league meet was beaten by Thaemert with a score of 435, topping the preceding record by almost 100 points.

Being only partially through the season, the Scholars Bowl team still has a few tournaments coming up, including Regionals held at Spring Hill on Feb. 4.

“Now that we’ve won Frontier League, our goal is set to win Regionals and qualify for State,” Darter said.

If the team places in the top three at the Spring Hill competition, they will go on to the State Tournament and have a chance at winning a State title.

Even if the Scholars Bowl team does not make it to the State Tournament, they have already set multiple records and have had a very successful season.
