The De Soto High School Homecoming dance was held on Sat. Oct. 24. The theme of the dance was “Big City, Bright Lights” featuring many drawings and cut-outs of different cities around the world and bright decorations.

According to freshman Haley Cuba, the music was good, but could have been improved.

“The [music] at Homecoming was good, but I wish there were more slow songs. Other than that, it was fun and a good experience,” Cuba said.

However, according to Junior Jackie Kennard, the lack of slow songs was not the problem.

“Some of the music seemed slightly inappropriate, and it wasn’t very good dance music,” Kennard said.

Kennard was one of the many volleyball players who were late to the dance, due to competing at the Sub-State tournament earlier that afternoon.

“Balancing the dance and Sub-State was not really a problem. The only issue was getting ready for the dance after the tournament. Our only focus was winning the games, but once that was over it was definitely hard to get ready,” Kennard said.

Senior Elaine Mayer thought the dance could have been improved overall, from the decorations to the music.

“The decorations could have been better, the theme seemed lost. The music was decent, but it didn’t seem like it was meant for dancing,” Mayer said.

Being her senior year, Mayer wanted the dance to be a positive experience that she can look back on.

“My experience was memorable. The only thing I would have made it better was to surround myself with more positive people,” Mayer said.

Despite the issues presented by the students, the overall experience of Homecoming was good, with many students promising to attend next year.

“I will definitely go next year because it will be my senior year,” Kennard said. “It’s a good time to socialize with everyone, and it’s fun to go to dinner and dress fancy with your friends.”
