Not only is there a De Soto High School football game on Sept. 5, but there is also a pep assembly, tailgate and the annual Back to School Mixer. But this time the Mixer is back with a twist.

This year the cheerleading team is also hosting a dodgeball tournament along with the Mixer.

Students signed up for dodgeball teams during lunch throughout the week. Students paid $20 for a team of 10 or $3 if they did not have a  team. Those who signed up as individuals would be assigned to a team.

If a student did not want to play dodgeball, he or she could attend the Mixer for $3 to hang out with friends, watch the tournament or dance.

The Mixer will take place directly after the football until 11 p.m. in the commons and in the auxiliary gym.

“It’s important to get involved with your school, and you can meet new people,” freshman Riley Moore said. “Especially for underclassmen because you become more comfortable with everything, and that’s why I think that everyone should go to the Mixer.”

There are also many activities going on before the Mixer.

Student Council will be holding the first pep assembly of the year during seminar. There will be a runway show that different teachers are participating in, and StuCo is going to show off a T-shirt that it designed, before the shirt is available for purchase.

StuCo members were required to sell 10 tickets to DHS students and staff. Each ticket was one dollar for the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. Half of the funding is going to the ALS foundation and the other half is going to StuCo. Those who bought tickets are entered into a raffle to dump the bucket of ice water onto DHS principal Dustin Mortenson.

Before the game, StuCo will also be hosting a tailgate starting at 5:30 p.m.

The first 100 DHS students at the tailgate will get a free hotdog and a bag of chips.

Students are encouraged to wear white for the game, because the theme is “white out”.

Students not in band, cheer, dance or football can receive Class Cup points for attending the game as well.
