With the recent number of snow days, many activities have had scheduled events pushed back, rescheduled or even cancelled entirely. One group that has been hit particularly hard is the De Soto High School Leaders in Teen Education team.
The LITE team, for those not in the know, is a student run community service group. Previous LITE team endeavors include book and food drives, as well as volunteering at a plethora of locations, including Harvesters.
“We have had two events cancelled because of the weather,” LITE team sponsor Jennifer Sosna said. “There was the day back in December when we were going to the Johnson County Christmas Bureau, and then this last week for the special Olympics.”
The LITE team was planning on attending a special Olympics basketball tournament and cheerleading competition on Feb. 1, but it was cancelled because of snow.
Despite these cancellations, the LITE team isn’t giving up just yet. The team has several events scheduled for later this year.
“We have a PTO event at Belmont Elementary that students can sign up for. A family fun night in February, that hopefully doesn’t get snowed out,” Sosna said. “There are some activities going on here in the building where students can come help make craft packets for the kids at Children’s Mercy. And then on May 1st we are going to Happy Bottoms, which is a volunteer service organization in Lenexa, hopefully no snow, to repackage diapers for low income families.”
