The week of Dec. 2-6 De Soto High School will be home to a very special exhibit honoring military service members who lost their lives in war since 9/11.
“Remembering Our Fallen” is a traveling monument to residents of Kansas that have given their lives to protect our country. All throughout Kansas this exhibit will be displayed in high schools, giving the opportunity for communities to see and remember the service members who have made the ultimate sacrifice for America.
“The district was contacted by the organization [Patriotic Productions], and the goal of this display is to continue to promote the fact that young people are still overseas giving up so much for our country. It is just a reminder of what is going on in our world and what the worst case scenario may be,” Principal Mark Meyer said.
The exhibit was formed by Patriotic Productions which was founded by Bill and Evonne Williams. This organization continually works to bring honor to the fallen heroes of the War on Terror. To do this they have created traveling displays for many states around the country. These displays include photos of the fallen service members from each specific state that are open to the communities they travel to in hopes that people will better understand the sacrifices that are made for the freedom of our country.
States which currently have a “Remembering Our Fallen” exhibit include Arizona, Colorado, Georgia, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Texas and Wisconsin. These exhibits can be displayed anywhere from a high school gym to state capitals. Each exhibit attracts numerous people who all wish to honor the sacrifices made.
“I really hope that this exhibit will bring [the students] a continued level of awareness for what our service men and women are doing for our country. We have students and teachers in our building who are impacted by the War on Terror and this helps show appreciation to those people,” Meyer said.
Throughout the week the exhibit will be set up in the commons along one of the walls. Students will be able to take time during some of their classes and throughout the day to observe the display and remember the fallen heroes of our country. DHS will be open each night of the week until 8 p.m. for guests from the community to come and see the display.
