For the 2013-14 school year, many changes are being made in terms of enrollment and class selection. These changes are being made in hopes of making enrollment run more smoothly.
“The high school staff just felt like the students needed to be more informed as to what happens with AP [Advanced Placement] classes, their expectations, and other things like that,” Counselor Christine Johns said. “We want students to be fully prepared. With these contracts, people will be more serious with enrollment and less likely to drop courses.”
The changes in enrollment begin with a new, online enrollment system. In previous years, enrollment has been done by hand, and schedules were created by office staff and counselors. However, this year, schedules were made online by individual students. Students and staff agree that this was quicker and more efficient.
“I liked it this way. It almost felt more personal because I got to make my schedule rather than someone else,” sophomore Sydney Webb said.
Besides the actual aspect of enrollment, changes were also made regarding what will happen post-enrollment as well. Students will no longer be able to drop classes as easily as before.
“I like it that people are held responsible for the courses that they sign up for. Some people that I know just drop courses because they are too lazy to do the work, this holds them accountable,” junior Montana Frehe.
Other changes involve a informational course before fully committing to an AP class. This allows students to explore the difficulty of the course before being stuck doing work that they are unable to complete.
“It will help students who are uninformed know more about the courses. It also ensures students that they will have a schedule that they are able to complete without being stressed. I wish they would have implemented this sooner,” junior Lizzi Henderson said.
